Help Save Cracker Buildings

Help me save authentic Florida Cracker Buildings from the path of progress or the ravages of time. If you have an old Cracker on your property, or one in the neighborhood, send me the address or directions and I'll visit the site. Complete buildings and outbuildings will be moved and restored when possible. Those beyond restoration will be lovingly dismantled, their rock-hard heart pine and termite-resistant cypress lumber reused in other restorations. Working together, we can stop further decline and destruction.

Beauty Hidden, Aluminum Wrapped

The porches are long gone, as are a few of the windows and a missing interior wall. This view is the front door, you enter into a hall with kitchen to the right and the bathroom to the left.


Sorry about the tree in front of a double set of windows. Can’t you visualize a tin-roofed porch wrapping this beauty? The door was a late addition when the house was moved to this site, they left the old fireplace behind and filled the opening with a door. The bottom of the door gives you a good idea of the height of the windows and ceilings, wonderful light in this room.


Inside this crappy back porch addition, we found a pleasant surprise — the beautiful condition of the novelty siding on the original exterior wall. I pray it's the same under the aluminum siding.

This may be why they call me CRAZY.

But really, can you believe my good fortune?


Seldom do you find an untouched vintage building is such pristine condition. It even included three refrigerators, plentiful grafitti, a rotten front porch floor, and only a few broken windows. I am about to become the proud new owner of this partially furnished, two bedroom, one bath cottage and I can't wait to get started. (UPDATE: Title problems delayed closing on this house, now expected in June).


Bathroom's a little cramped, but it sure beat the outhouse.


Kitchen could use some updating but it does include three refrigerators.

Rough and sound as a dollar (make that a Euro). Ready for its restoration and relocation.
