1.5 Million Square Feet
Back from the Builders Show and my dogs are barking. Over 100,000 in attendance, must've logged 100 miles by Saturday! It was pretty exciting, everything imaginable was being raffled off, motorcycles, trucks, a cement mixer, I-pods, plasma TV's, Deere lawn tractors and much more. You didn't even have to enter a raffle to walk away with a bunch of free stuff. I scored a lifetime supply of free carpenter's pencils, T-shirts and baseball hats. This was quite a show but I saved the best for last:
THE CRACKER JOE - BEST OF SHOW goes to MARIANNE CUSATO,
who thought up with these brillant little little cottages named the Katrina Cottages. They're intended to replace those sterile FEMA trailers, first as temporary housing and then expanded into proper homes as time and resources permit. Why live in a temporary FEMA trailer with the eviction clock ticking, when you can start rebuilding your own future right now? These clever cottages are designed as expandable re-starter homes with integrity, style and some self-respect. BRAVO MARIANNE!

Another Cracker Joe prize went to two new tabloid publications: the Mississippi Renewal Forum's "Recommendations for Rebuilding the Gulf Coast" and "A Pattern Book for Gulf Coast Neighborhoods" (includes floor plans and elevations with builders sets available, don't miss this one). These are enlightened tomes produced in a two week creative flurry, by 200 architectural professionals, under the guidance of Andres Duany. Inspired, impressive works on urban planning and traditional architecture, they're on a par with the Pattern Language and they're only $17 each. They should be required reading for very planner on the Gulf Coast and should be considered in every communities response to the asphalt onslaught. BRAVO MISSISSIPPI!
